Bush is shown with his son George W. Bush, who would later become USA president, and wife Barbara Bush in Rye, N.Y., in 1955.

Facing the nation for the first time as its president, George H.W. Bush vowed to lead with humility, moral principle and a spirit of unity. The current president gave Bush, a decorated WWII naval aviator who flew several combat missions, a brief salute before the first couple left the Capitol.

Bush, also a former congressman, will be lying in state at the Capitol from Monday to Wednesday once his casket arrives from Houston.

A similar outpouring is anticipated in Washington this week during the state funeral for Bush, who died late on Friday at his home in Houston. Presidents are traditionally asked to eulogize presidents who have died - and in past state events like this, that has been the case - but the Bush family is unlike any other and has another president in the family who will fill that role.

Bush's body will then return to Houston, where a public viewing of his casket will be held before a private funeral service on Thursday.

Bush's passing puts him back in the Washington spotlight after more than two decades living the relatively low-key life of a former president.

He failed to win a second term after breaking a no-new-taxes pledge.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement Wednesday has been designated as a national day of mourning, and that the White House flags have already been lowered to half staff to honor Bush.

Asked about his call on Saturday with President Trump, he said it was a brief, but pleasant conversation.

McGrath and the presidential library didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, the City of Houston is honoring George H.W. Bush with a City Hall tribute and is urging people who attend to dress in colorful socks.

Baker said the elder Bush's last words were, "I love you, too", spoken to the younger President Bush, the country's 43rd president.

His death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

4141 George Bush Locomotive, which was unveiled October 18, 2005, was dedicated to honor the nation's 41st president.
