Alan Shearer believes the Football Association's decision to recall Wayne Rooney to the England squad has reduced next week's global friendly with the United States to a testimonial.

Former Manchester United skipper and England's record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney says he is "truly humbled and excited to play for England" after the FA confirmed the Liverpudian will be included in Gareth Southgate's squad for a charity fundraising friendly against the US at Wembley on November 15.

The DC United striker has been in excellent club form in MLS, scoring 12 goals to help them reach the play-offs, and he is set to earn his 120th and final England cap in a match that will raise funds in support of his own charity, the Wayne Rooney Foundation.

The global friendly has been dubbed The Wayne Rooney Foundation worldwide and some of the proceeds from the game will go towards the Manchester United great's charity.

The 33-year-old is a record goalscorer for both Manchester United and England, has not played global football for almost two years.

"The connection between the FA and former England players is something that has always been very important to me", Southgate said.

The FA added the match would give the Wembley crowd the "chance to show their appreciation of one of England's greats as the curtain comes down on a glittering Three Lions career that spanned three FIFA World Cups and three UEFA European Championships". England should not have to honour you.

"That would make more sense than saying: 'Thanks for playing for England, Wayne, here's another game for you'. But they should not turn an worldwide match into a testimonial".

The full England squad for the United States match as well as the Nations League fixture against Croatia on 18 November will be announced on Thursday, November 8.
