Though weakened to a tropical storm, Florence was expected to regain hurricane strength as it neared Bermuda.

"A hurricane is coming our way", McMaster said Sunday at a news conference held at the State Emergency Operations Center.

Delaware Gov. John Carney says state officials are closely monitoring the approach of Hurricane Florence, which is heading toward the USA for what forecasters said could be a direct hit on the Southeast toward the end of the week.

The National Hurricane Center has issued advisories for the Atlantic on Hurricane Florence, and two tropical storms, Helene and Isaac.

With winds at 75 miles per hour (120 km per hour), Florence became a Category 1 hurricane and was expected to develop within a day into a major storm, defined as Category 3 or higher, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.

Some swells generated by the storm have already been reported and can potentially cause unsafe surf conditions and rip currents.

According to updates at 5am from the NHC, the center of Tropical Storm Florence was located near latitude 24.5 North, longitude 55.8 West. The storm's about 760 miles southeast of Bermuda and moving west at 6 mph.

"This storm is too powerful and its path is too uncertain to take any chances", he said.

Ralph Northam (D) has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of possible effects of Tropical Storm Florence.

"Maximum sustained winds are near 65 miles per hour (100 km/h) with higher gusts".

NHC forecasters say that Florence is expected to rapidly strengthen into a major hurricane by Monday, and is forecast to remain an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday.
