Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, central defensive partners for European champions Real Madrid, were nearly guaranteed a spot and the four-man defence was completed by their club teammate Marcelo.

"Without my coaches, I would not have won this and without my family I would not be the player I am today", said 33-year-old Modric. "You just need to believe and to work for it. It's been a night when all my dreams have come true".

Modric beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to win the best men's player award, while Brazilian global Marta added a sixth title to her collection.

The Fifa Fan Award went to Peru's supporters who caused absolute scenes (in a good way) in Russian Federation this summer as the national team made their way to their first World Cup tournament in 36 years.

Modric later posted a picture on his Twitter account with the trophies and wrote, "Dedicated to everyone who loves football".

But while Messi didn't make the final short-list of three, Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah were in the mix with Modric this time around.

Meanwhile, Sport simply stated that "The Best is Messi end of story" and drew upon comments from Samuel Eto'o and Dani Alves to back their claim.

While the midfielder was full of praise for Ronaldo and Messi, he said his season was also worthy of recognition. "And for this I am happy that people recognise me as the best for this year". "He's like my assistant in the field and I really appreciate Luka Modric for everything this guy did this year and he deserves everything".

The pair made it onto the FIFPro Team of the Year but neither were there to pick up their trophies for the honour.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian legend Sami Al-Jaber presented the award for Best Fans to a small contingent of Peruvians who represented the more than 40,000 compatriots who attended this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation, their country's first appearance in 36 years.

The votes counted for included the coaches and captains of the national teams affiliated to Federation Internationale de Football Association including Uganda Cranes.
