This is due to the fact that starting this November, Microsoft will no longer be accepting new apps for Windows 8.x or Windows Phone 8.x into the Microsoft Store.

Although Windows 8.1 doesn't reach its end of life date until 10 January 2023, it's clear that Microsoft wants to make sure it can get away on time and has already, seemingly, chose to lock the doors, put the blinds down and cash up the tills. It's not like we weren't warned.

Crucially, while updates will no longer be distributed to older devices after the above dates, developers for these apps can still publish updates. That is a major change from previous versions of the Windows 10 Photos app, where all editing tools were available at a quick glance on the right-hand side of the UI.

On July 1, 2023, the same will happen to devices running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Both operating systems are in the extended support phase which means that Microsoft will release security updates for the operating systems but won't push updates with new features anymore. Here's how your business can respond.
