Health officials say so far this summer, the virus has been found in 30 different mosquito groups in Salt Lake County alone.

To date, a total of 23 dead birds and two mosquito samples have tested positive for WNV this season in Saginaw County, officials said.

Mosquitoes typically become carriers of West Nile virus after feeding on an infected bird and can then spread the potentially lethal strain to animals and humans.

To report suspected cases of human WNV, call the DPH Office of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at 888-295-5156.

But West Nile virus activity fluctuates from year to year and is influenced by local circumstances, including climate and mosquito populations. Signs of the virus include flu-like symptoms, where the horse seems mildly anorexic and depressed. In rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease with symptoms such as disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, in-flammation of the brain, and going into a coma. "Some steps you can take include using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents, wearing light-colored long-sleeved shirts and trousers when outside and using mosquito netting to protect infants in carriages, strollers and playpens". View the HealthLinkBC file on DEET (http://www.healthlinkbc.ca/healthfiles/hfile96.stm) for guidelines on how frequently to apply repellent. According to Rider, we haven't had this type of mosquito in years, but with the rise of Zika in South America, they wanted to make sure we don't start seeing them again. This is important, particularly for people who work outdoors or where mosquitoes are found. Avoid being outside at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active if possible.

Drain Standing Water - Many mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water.

Cover up your exposed skin with long trousers and long sleeves.

Prevent mosquito breeding around your home. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently. Horse owners should keep horses in indoor stalls at night to reduce their risk of exposure to mosquitoes.

Use mosquito repellent on exposed skin.
