McCain ran for president in 2000, losing the Republican nomination to the eventual 43rd president, George W. Bush, and in 2008, he ran again, this time winning his party's nomination.
Senator John McCain's allies and political foes have rallied in a rare show of unity in offering condolences on the death of the Vietnam war hero.
