McCain, who died Saturday at the age of 81, was shot down flying a bombing mission in Vietnam in 1967, but is known more in that country for what he did in mending ties and normalizing relations with the United States in recent years.

In his tweet, Trump mentioned only McCain's family and offered no praise for McCain, who he had battled since announcing his run for the presidency in 2016.

On Saturday, the nation learned about the passing of an American hero, Senator John McCain. Both former presidents have been particularly critical of Trump.

U.S. Rep. Phil Roe, R-1st, of Johnson City, spoke of working with McCain on veterans issues in a statement released by his office.

Trump finally issued a statement Monday afternoon, two days after McCain's death, tersely saying, "Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Sen". A member of Congress is supposed to get the flags lowered on the day of his or her death, as well as the day after.

The American flag at the White House was lowered to half-staff on Sunday. "McCain and his family, Gov. Ducey will not be making any announcements about an appointment until after the senator is laid to rest", Daniel Ruiz II said, as quoted by The New York Times.

Barack Obama and George W. Bush are expected to give eulogies at a funeral at Washington National Cathedral.

McCain told "60 Minutes" back in September 2017, "I want, when I leave, that the ceremony is at the Naval Academy".
