A turn toward the northwest is expected Wednesday into Thursday.

The US National Weather Service says Hurricane Lane has strengthened to become a Category 5 hurricane, which means that it is likely to cause catastrophic damage with winds 157km/h or above.

"Hurricane Lane is not a well-behaved hurricane", Ige said in a statement Tuesday. Senior Honolulu forecaster Tom Birchard says the watch for Hurricane Lane has been issued for the island of Hawaii and Maui County, which includes the island of Maui and other smaller islands.

"Slow weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Lane is forecast to remain a risky hurricane as it draws closer to the Hawaiian Islands". Even close calls are somewhat rare, with Hawaii getting a named storm within 60 miles of its coastline about once every four years on average.

Another hurricane is threatening to impact Hawaii this week, as risky Category 4 Hurricane Lane approaches the Central Pacific island chain just two weeks after Hurricane Hector passed the islands.

During her speech, the first lady acknowledged that children can be more aware of the "pitfalls" of social media than adults. He said one in five children experience bullying, and that 16 per cent of children now are victims of cyberbullying.

The U.S. Central Pacific Hurricane Center downgraded Hurricane Lane to a Category 4, the second-strongest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of wind intensity. Mount Kilauea began producing lava flows in early May and portions of the southeastern coastline of the Big Island have been transformed by the lava flows that covered over 13 square miles (35 square kilometers). Storm surge is also likely to be an issue, but which locations see surge, and how high it is, will depend on the exact track of the storm. "Interests throughout Hawaii are urged to closely monitor the progress of Lane during the next few days". Early indications showed that the south end of the island up to the western side would be taking the brunt of the storm.

"The center of Lane will track dangerously close to the islands Thursday through Saturday", the advisory said. Deep tropical moisture associated with Lane will spread across all islands.

Starting Wednesday night it was forecast to dump 10 to 15 inches of rain, with isolated amounts greater than 20 inches over the Hawaiian Islands, the centre said.

As of 8 a.m. today, Lane was about 420 miles south-southeast of Hilo, 450 miles south-southeast of Kailua-Kona and 390 miles south-southeast of South Point. They then placed the hurricane in category 5, the highest category a hurricane can be given.

The storm may maintain peak winds of 100 miles per hour even into Friday, when it is projected to be just south of Maui and Oahu, before weakening to tropical storm intensity over the weekend.
