Jared Leto sinking teeth into Marvel's Morbius the Living Vampire

The project comes from director Daniel Espinosa ("Life") and writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (who created Netflix's "Lost in Space").

Sources told Variety that Espinosa met Leto last month in Germany while the Suicide Squad star - who played The Joker in the superhero movie - was touring with his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars. In the comics, the character was often an an antagonist to Spider-Man, though he evolved into a heroic figure over time.

Jared Leto has landed a role in the Spider-Man spin-off Morbius! Morbius previously appeared on TV in Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Ultimate Spider-Man Vs The Sinister Six, and was originally earmarked to make his film debut in Blade until his cameo was deleted and plans to make him the villain in Blade II scrapped. There's also the recently announced Silk movie, as well as Silver and Black and Nightwatch, the latter of which has Spike Lee interested in directing.

Leto has also reportedly been attached to produce and star in a solo film as the Joker for Warner Bros.

South Korea v Germany: Champions to make the most of second chance

It remains to be seen how the Morbius movie will connect to Tom Holland's Spider-Man adventures, if it ever will at all.

Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige ran point on Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home. Michael Keaton's Vulture will return, while Jake Gyllenhaal has signed to play the main antagonist Mysterio.

"The two people who are reading it, I can't name obviously because they haven't said yes, but they said, 'The Jeff Buckley story hasn't been told, and we're huge fans.' So that's a start, but one of them said, 'Wow it's got the love story, you meet your wife on the road with Jeff Buckley".
