Final preparations under way for Trump-Kim summit

Kim is due to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong later on Sunday, Singapore's ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement. The president arrived in Asia having blown up relations with USA allies - and personally with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - over trade and Russian Federation, announcing via Twitter en route to Singapore that he'd withdraw from a joint agreement covering climate change and other issues.

Trump arrived in Singapore after another meeting with foreign leaders - a group of close American allies. The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists up until he shakes hands with Trump.

The story was reported the front page of the ruling party's newspaper and was the only item on Monday's first news broadcast on Korean Central Television, which for many in the North is the only channel available.

President Trump has said he will use the summit, scheduled to begin Tuesday, to push for North Korea's denuclearization.

The White House said the daylong summit would also include a working lunch and a larger meeting involving aides to both leaders.

The top news lately has instead been tremendously mundane, all things considered - a visit by Kim to a seafood restaurant in Pyongyang.

"The senior officials of the party and government sincerely wished Kim Jong Un good successes in the first summit meeting and talks between the DPRK and the United States and his safe return", the KCNA said.

Last year, the North made one of the biggest breakthroughs in its missile and nuclear weapons programs - which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a USA invasion - when it announced that it had "completed" its state nuclear program after testing a missile capable of striking most, if not all, of the continental U.S.

Pompeo, who was in Singapore, did not go into specific details about how the USA would secure the country, but he said talks between the US and North Korea are moving briskly. It will take place after some tension, when the nations exchanged insults, and Trump famously called Kim "little rocket man".

Mr Pompeo said the summit was "an unprecedented opportunity to change the trajectory of our relationship and bring peace and prosperity" to North Korea. "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said.

The U.S. president also dangled the prospect of inviting Kim to Washington if the meeting is a success.

"If I think it won't happen, I'm not going to waste my time", he said.

"I feel that Kim Jong-Un wants to do something great for his people".

Trump says United States won't sign G7 joint statement, leaving summit in chaos
G7 includes the seven leading industrialized countries of Britain, the United States, France , Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada. Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".
