The objective of the visit to McAllen, Texas, was "to take part in briefings and tours at a nonprofit social services center for children who have entered the United States illegally and a customs and border patrol processing center", according to a statement released by the White House.

First lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to a McAllen detention centre that's housing some of the children, where she asked kids where they came from and how long they had been at the facility.

"She wants to see what's real", said the first lady's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN during a 10-minute press briefing en route to Texas.

However, he made a U-turn yesterday under mounting pressure and when signing the order, Trump said he did it because he "didn't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated". A fraction of them were separated from their parents under the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration into the USA from Mexico.

In McAllen, Texas, Melania Trump visited the Upbring New Hope Children's Shelter, a federally-funded facility that houses some 55 children from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, ages five to 17.

While adults await legal processing and prosecution, their children are put in the custody of a division of the Health and Human Services Department.

"It's about keeping families together while at the same time making sure that we have a very powerful, very strong border", Mr. Trump said as he signed the order in a hastily arranged Oval Office gathering. The words, "Welcome! First Lady" were written in black marker across the red and white bars.

South Dakota had challenged the physical-presence rule, saying it was losing roughly $48 to $58 million in revenue each year. They could lower "the sales tax rate or make more significant investments in infrastructure which creates jobs", he says.

"An earlier version incorrectly stated the Trump administration was suspending prosecutions for parents of migrant children", the correction says.

Pelosi also slammed President Trump's immigration policies after he tweeted that open borders were her "dream".

"She wants to see what's happening for herself and she wants to lend her support, executive order or not", said Grisham. The event was reported as Trump ending family separations, but that is far from true.

We bring families together, not apart.

When asked what message the first lady's jacket meant to send, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said: "It's a jacket". In addition to the meetings with staff and children, Mrs. Trump also was briefed on the children's medical care by nursing staff. Mr. Trump commended DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Wednesday at the order's signing, saying she did a "great job" with her vigorous defense of the administration policy the past few weeks in the face of a nationwide outcry.
