The United States announced last Thursday that it would impose 25% and 10% duties on steel and aluminum from Mexico, Canada and the European Union, prompting Mexico's government to strike back swiftly by announcing it would impose its own "equivalent measures."

Mexico on Tuesday slapped a 25% import tariff on a wide range of steel products from the USA, matching the US steel duty.

Mexico imports so much US pork - almost one-third of what's consumed - that the government says it will waive tariffs on up to 350,000 tons of pork imported from other nations to avoid destabilizing the market.

British Prime Minister Theresa May told President Donald Trump on Monday that USA tariffs imposed on European Union steel and aluminium imports were "unjustified and deeply disappointing" during a phone call.

The U.S., Mexico and Canada are locked in a contentious renegotiation of the North American Trade Agreement.

The Mexican tariffs will hit its pork, dairy and potato exports, Minnesota state officials said.

The attacks came as the government is already reeling from Trump's imposition last week of steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, part the president's broader tariff attack on Mexico and Europe.

While other World Trade Organization members are also considering retaliating by targeting iconic American products - such as bourbon whiskey and Harley-Davidson motorcycles - the escalating tensions between Mexico and the USA may further complicate the renegotiation of the NAFTA trade accord.

"We are not seeking to escalate any situation, but not responding would be the same as accepting these tariffs, which we consider are illegal", Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said.

Mexico said yesterday that it will challenge the metal tariffs at the World Trade Organization, following the leads of Canada and the European Union.

Pierre Lampron, president of the Dairy Farmers of Canada, sent Trudeau a letter on Monday, demanding a meeting and questioning his support for the dairy industry.

He compared the tariffs to one infamous example of American tariff policy: the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, passed by the U.S.in 1930, just as the Great Depression was taking hold.

The EU, Canada and Mexico had previously been exempt from the tariffs, which Trump originally announced in March. "We will work aggressively to educate policymakers and others about the facts".
