Will dating feature make Facebook a major threat to data privacy?

Beyond creating new competition for popular dating apps like Tinder, Hinge and Bumble, Facebook's move will pose a test for them because they have largely come to rely on asking their users to login with Facebook credentials.

Facebook says its new feature won't be matching people who are already Facebook friends.

They will be able to use a new Clear History tool on the platform, which will make viewing and deleting the information stored on users by Facebook much easier.

The announcement turned out to be a real hit, and a major blow to other dating sites as their shares plummeted yesterday. It turns out that there is definitely some crossover of employees who have worked at various dating sites over the last several years, who are now at Facebook - but most likely, this is mostly a product of the general churn that you get in the tech world, where people are often jumping from one job to another.

The new dating service has events and groups that are based on users interests, where the user can join to find people with similar interests. But Facebook continues to look for new ways to expand.

Or, as Zuckerberg noted, it's "not just for hookups".

May 12: Mark Your Calendar to Stamp out Hunger in Branford
Food insecurity is real for thousands of people in Itasca County and one in five children are at risk of hunger every day. Hunger affects about 50 million people around the country, including millions of children, senior citizens and veterans.

Facebook also unveiled its newly launched standalone virtual reality Oculus Go headset, which does not need to be tethered to a computer (unlike the Oculus VR headset).

Although we don't yet know how mutual interest will be indicated, once this happens Facebook Dating will offer you the opportunity to start a conversation, which will take place separately from WhatsApp and Messenger (both now owned by Facebook). "Security isn't a problem than you ever fully solve", Zuckerberg said. "This is an arms race; we are going to be working to stay ahead of our adversaries forever". It could make dating a bit safer and more comfortable - and encourage better behavior - if people meeting for the first time had friends in common.

It would appear that despite the claims of these online dating services - based on surveys and limited in-house testing - there is a significant lack of independent scientific research. Shares of Match Group - the parent company of dating platforms like Tinder, Match.com and OKCupid - plunged as much as 19% on Tuesday afternoon following the news.

The Facebook Dating profile is supposed to be a somewhat separate set of activities from regular Facebook.

"There are millions of singles in this demographic who want to meet someone but have reservations about using dating apps", Golden explained. Factor in the work Facebook is doing on facial recognition and artificial intelligence, and you have a shady power nexus that no internet-savvy user would touch, no matter the promises of finding a soulmate.

"Facebook could have copied swiping apps in its attempt to enter the dating space, but instead they copied Hinge", the spokesperson said. Users who do not opt to use the feature will be unable to see you, and your dating profile will not be visible to your friends - meaning you can keep your dating habits discreet.
