Throughout the summer, the library also scheduled special events to fit with the Libraries Rock theme every Wednesday at 1 p.m. Summer Reading also includes activities, programming and challenges for teens and adults.

Summer Reading at Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library will kick off on Saturday, June 2 with a big celebration from 10 a.m.to noon.

"So the more the reading logs they turn in, the better their chances to get their name in the drawing and win the grand prize", said Turner. On June 9, the real fun begins with an after-hours party held exclusively in the program's honor.

In addition, kids can complete an exercise log, sponsored by Adena Health System. "I think a lot of kids came away with a really positive interaction with the library", Grove said. Adults will be entered into drawings each time they visit the library and check out books and will also receive extra entries for attending library programs.

For babies, the pre-reading program is meant to encourage early literacy practices in families while the baby's brain is still in a critical developmental phase.

Make, Listen, and Move, a program for children 6 to 10 years old, is every Monday at 10:30 p.m. Moran said the session includes a musical instrument craft and another music-related activity. There were some school visits previous year where "The Book with No Pictures" was read multiple times.

Participants in the children's division can earn rewards every week by reading at least five books or 50 pages or for at least 30 minutes. The system is now the largest library system in Florida by square footage and one of the busiest, with more than 7.5 million walk-in customers visiting its 38 locations annually.

"Whether it's songs, or instruments, or the sounds of nature", she said.

"For us, it always comes down to helping the schools prevent summer slide", Grove said, referring to the idea that relative inactivity during the summer months might cause some students to lose academic achievement gains.
