Ricciardo posted the third fastest lap in the race and looked to have the edge on his teammate, but lost fourth place during a pit stop late in the race, setting the scene for the pending disaster.

The statement issued by the stewards noted that Verstappen had moved twice while trying to defend his position, but that Ricciardo was also at fault for braking so late.

"The most important thing is that they both recognise that what has happened is unacceptable", Horner added. "We even discussed it in pre-race meetings about giving each other space". Unfortunately, that hasn't happened.

While it is admirable that Horner is keen see his drivers push the boundaries, surely it is time for Red Bull to take a stance, otherwise they will never challenge for the constructors' championship.

The Red Bull drivers will be forced to apologise to chiefs at the manufacturer's head offices in Milton Keynes.

"...it's more just about saying sorry to the team", Ricciardo said, "just apologise the best way we can". "We even discussed it in the morning, that we wanted to avoid a repeat of Force India's scenario from past year, and that we would allow them to race, but please allow each other space. We may have to be less eager when we are racing together", he said. "We tried to keep it clean and give each other room but we were racing hard and in the end it cost us", he said.

"I'm not going to talk about the incident but this was the worst case scenario and everyone is pretty heartbroken. I will personally apologize to the team and once again I'm just sorry we are all in this situation when everyone has worked so hard to give us such a good vehicle". We will learn from this and have to make sure it doesn't happen again.
