A policeman died after militants attacked a guard post in the Wadwan area of Budgam district on Friday.
The clashes erupted soon after the government forces launched a cordon-and-search operation following the killing of a cop in a militant attack. The incident led to a gunfight between security forces and the militants, according to PTI.
He said the terrorists appeared outside the guard post and held-up selection grade constable Shamim Ahmad who was unarmed and was going to offer Friday prayers at a nearby mosque, he said. "The alert jawans successfully foiled the attempt", said a Srinagar-based spokesman.

Later, Ahmad, who resided at Check Hanjan Yaripora in Kulgam district, succumbed to the injuries, added the spokesperson.
There have been several such attacks recently when militants attempted to snatch rifles from the policemen on duty. The incident took place two days after state Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called for a unilateral ceasefire during Ramzan month.
The youth has been identified as Adil Farooq Mir son of Farooq Mir resident of Galwanpora, Budgam.
