The Connecticut Supreme Court docket has ordered {that a} new trial be held for Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel, who was convicted for the 1975 homicide of Martha Moxley, in line with The Related Press.

In a 4-3 decision, the court ruled that Skakel's trial attorney had failed to identify a witness for Skakel's alibi, depriving him of a fair trial, The Associated Press reported.

Convicted of the crime in 2002, Skakel's case snaked through appellate courts for more than a decade and garnered attention because of the convicted man's relationship to one of America's most powerful political dynasties. Prosecutors alleged that Skakel was angry at Moxely for not returning his feelings for her and having sexual interactions with his brother Tommy.

The nephew of Robert F. Kennedy's widow, Ethel Kennedy, Skakel had his innocence defended by another scion of the family.

He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, but was freed on $1.2 million bail after the lower court overturned his murder conviction in 2013.

"The physical evidence will be sent to state labs for testing, and the ability to pick up minute amounts of DNA has increased dramatically in the last 10 to 20 years", Pattis told the Herald.

A spokesman for the CT chief state's attorney's office, which argued against Skakel's appeal in court, said the office was reviewing the decision.

"This has been a long road for Michael and we are grateful to the court for its ruling today", Hubert Santos said in a statement. Zarella left the court at the end of 2016 to return to private practice. D'Auria was in the majority decision Friday.

"Without Ossorio's testimony, the state was able to attack the petitioner's (Skakel's) abili - a complete alibi for the time period during which it is highly likely that the victim was murdered - as part of a Skakel family conspiracy to cover up the petitioner's involvement in the victim's murder", Palmer wrote.

He said he would not trade places with Skakel for anything. "That's half of my life that has gone on, and I'm willing to spend the rest of my life to find justice for Martha", Dorothy Moxley told the Herald yesterday. He may be walking the streets, but he'll be in hell at some point'.
