India, Sweden Announce Joint Innovation Partnership

Modi attended an India-Nordic Summit yesterday where all the leaders of Nordic countries - PM Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Finnish Premier Juha Sipila, Iceland Premier Katrin Jakobsdottir, Norwegian Premier Erna Solberg and Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven. In October 2017, PM Lofven participated in "Make in India: Sweden 2017" event organized in Stockholm.

"They acknowledged that innovation and digital transformation drive growth in an interconnected world, which underpin a growing engagement between India and the Nordic countries", it stated. He said Sweden had been India's partner in the field of defence for a long time and would continue to be so, with a special focus on defence manufacturing.

"A key pillar of our bilateral ties is our defence and security cooperation".

In fields of Space and science, the plan aims to "Acknowledge the importance of bilateral cooperation on space research, technology, innovation and applications".

According to the Joint Action Plan, both sides "reaffirmed the need for reform of the UN Security Council, including its expansion, to make it more representative, accountable, effective, and responsive to the realities of the 21st century".

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and multilateral cooperation at the delegation-level talks. He also lauded the countries' past partnership in defence, expressing confidence that new opportunities in defence production would be created in the future. Modi also said India and Sweden will continue their close cooperation on the global stage.

"This is my first visit to Sweden and a visit by an Indian PM after a gap of almost 30 years, " Mr. Modi tweeted soon after arriving in Stockholm.

The joint statement said they will enhance Indo-Swedish dialogue on defence cooperation.

Indian officials involved in organising the four-day prime ministerial visit to the United Kingdom have said that protests and demonstrations are "part and parcel of any democratic society" and there are no plans to curtail them in any way.

"No important global conversation, be it on climate change or sustainable development, is complete without the voice of India", said Löfven during the joint press conference in Stockholm. PM Modi on his arrival to Sweden had been warmly welcomed by Swedish PM Stefan Lofven and by the Indian community.

At the end of the live telecast, he will join Heads of Government from 52 other Commonwealth countries at a dinner hosted by the British prime minister as a formal welcome to CHOGM. He will also have a brief stopover in Berlin, Germany, on April 20 while on his way back home.
