The 30-year-old is desperate to get into France's World Cup squad and Wenger's revealed the Frenchman didn't actually want to leave Arsenal.

"It was an honest conversation", said Wilshere.

At the time of the pair's discussion, Wilshere had returned from a loan spell at Bournemouth created to improve his all-round fitness and provide much-needed first-team action. So I chose to build up my fitness.

The Frenchman was part of the deal which saw Michy Batshuayi leave quit the Blues to join Borussia Dortmund on loan, while Gabon striker Pirerre-Emerick Aubameyang signed a four-year contract worth £57.38 million during the January transfer window.

Wilshere, who has scored twice in 31 appearances for Arsenal this season, is now with the England squad preparing for the upcoming global friendlies with Netherlands and Italy.

Neither the Netherlands or Italy qualified for this summer's World Cup, while England reached Russian Federation without losing a game in qualifying.

'It was completely justified and I'm very happy that he got a great reception'. "There's more young players, there's more of a group I think and there's more of a plan towards the future".

"But I've always felt like it's somewhere that I belong and I want to be involved in this".

"Ideally, yes, I want it sorted as soon as possible". But we have three months till then and a lot can happen.

"I had the vision going forward to get back and now it's down to me to stake my claim".

"Hopefully, going into the World Cup, I'll be fit and, if selected, confident", he added.
