According to Henry County Sheriff Kenneth McBrayer, police were serving a bench warrant on a suspect for failure to appear in Locust Grove municipal court.

"We just can't believe this happened", he said.

Locust Grove Mayor Robert Price said Officer Chase Maddox was the city officer who died Friday. One is in serious condition, according to McBrayer, when a bullet struck him in the stomach about two inches below the vest.

About three minutes after the Locust Grove officer arrived, there was an altercation, and that's when the officer, deputies and suspect were shot.

He said gunfire erupted as they were trying to take a male suspect into custody. The other was in reasonable condition, and was hit in the vest. When he wouldn't cooperate, they called the Locust Grove officer for backup, McBrayer said. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Nelly Miles said officials are still notifying next of kin before identifying the suspect.
