Snow falls in Tallahassee, other areas of North Florida

Officials in Tallahassee have reported seeing white snowflakes falling in the panhandle of Florida.

In Central Florida, the state's largest theme parks announced that water attractions such as Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay and SeaWorld's Aquatica were closed Wednesday because of the cold snap.

Officials in Tallahassee closed down more than 50 miles of Interstate 10 because of icy conditions Wednesday morning, as flurries fell for the first time since 1989, city officials said.

Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport received 1.2 inches of snow, making it the seventh-heaviest one-day snowfall on record there.

Schools have closed in several northern Florida districts, while students across much of the area remain out on winter break.

The last time locals saw that much snow was in December 1989. Some light freezing rain reached the western part of Duval County, and some flakes of snow were seen briefly at the National Weather Service office in Jacksonville.

In Georgia, up to 6 inches of snow fell in Ellabell, 5 inches was measured in Pembroke, 4 inches accumulated in Nevils, and a general 1 to 2 inches of snow had piled up in Thomasville, Vidalia and as far east as Chatham County.

Due to weather conditions, some airlines are allowing passengers to rebook flights without paying a cancellation fee -including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines as near-blizzard conditions are expected to blast through the eastern United States.

It is expected to be even colder in Central Florida on Thursday. Jacksonville is under a Freeze Warning.
