Australia couldn't make it through to the final of the Hopman Cup in Perth, but Thanasi Kokkinakis came away with one of the biggest wins of his career over Alexander Zverev on Friday night.

Kokkinakis helped Australia to win the first set of the doubles but Kerber maintained her fiery dominance to steer Germany to a 1-4 4-1 4-3 (3) victory.

Zverev praised two-time major victor Kerber's performance, admitting he nearly lost the match for Germany.

Federer produced some brilliant play in the second set as he unceremoniously put Zverev back in his place, and the 20-year-old was unable to match his opponent. I'm going to the physio now to see what it is.

Germany needed to win the tie against Australia to book a spot in the final against Switzerland and knock Belgium out.
