Britain plans to eliminate plastic waste in 25 years

Theresa May's proposals include plastic free aisles in supermarkets to allow shoppers to buy fruit and vegetables that are not packaged with plastic and extending the 5p charge on plastic bags to smaller shops.

The Prime Minister is also being urged to back demands from a committee of MPs earlier this week for a 25p "latte levy" on throwaway plastic coffee cups.

She added: "With the promise of a new Resource and Waste Strategy this year it is vital we get the details right and this means a root and branch reform of Producer Responsibility thinking in the United Kingdom and the channelling of much needed funds to councils to support household recycling".

More than one million birds and 100,000 turtles, whales and dolphins die from eating or getting tangled in plastic waste. One in three fish caught in the English Channel contains pieces of plastic.

She is expected to say that the 2042 pledge to eliminate avoidable plastic waste, where it is "technologically, environmentally and economically practical" to do so, will be met through a series of "measures".

Louise Edge, Senior Oceans Campaigner at Greenpeace UK, described the planned announcements as "a missed opportunity" which "don't match the scale of the environmental crisis we face".

Bishop Holtam, the C of E's lead bishop on environmental issues, said on Thursday that it was good news that the environment had become a priority, and that there was "a recognition of the state we are in".

In the plan, it was outlined how the government would take action on each step of a plastic product lifestyle, including working with the industry in production, consumption and end of life.

There will also be measures to inject new funding into plastics innovation through the government's £7 billion research and development pot.

Furthermore, the Tories also lobbied against the initial charges of plastic bags, arguing, wrongly, that the policies wouldn't achieve ecological targets and would cost the taxpayer £1.5billion plus £70million in additional Value-Added Tax.
