SAFA hails Weah's election as Liberia president

According to him, he had earlier placed a call to Weah, congratulating him on his prospective victory in the runoff election, and availed himself to help him in any way he may be found useful to advance the good of the country.

In a nationwide broadcast from his party's headquarters in Monrovia on Friday, Mr. Boakai who was flanked by his supporters and party leaders, said he had already called Mr. Weah to congratulate him.

He said being conscious of the great need for the country to be reconciled and nudged on the track of transformation, he also offers a hand of goodwill, friendship, and gratitude for a historic contest.

"Wishing President-elect Weah and Liberians a peaceful transition, he reassures them of Nigeria's determination to sustain the current cordial relationship with Liberia", Buhari said. It will coordinate the democratic transfer of power, Liberia's first since 1944, and ensure Weah is provided with regular national security briefings.

Liberia's president-elect and ex-soccer star George Weah says he is "honored to join a new generation of heads of state".

Weah adds that "we have a lot to do together to accelerate the building of tomorrow's Africa".

And the former Monaco and PSG player in his response, used the opportunity to advise the two-time African Footballer of the Year to serve his people.

The new president is expected to take office in January. Weah will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as president next month.

"Pursuant to the authority vested in the Commission by the Constitution and the new election law of the Republic of Liberia, and based on the results just read, I, acting on behalf of the board of commissioners, do hereby declare the presidential ticket of senator George Weah and Jewel Howard-Taylor as the victor from the December 26, 2017 presidential run-off election", board president Jerome Korkoya said.

Vice-President Joseph Boakai conceded on Friday, congratulating Weah.

"I, Joseph Boakai, a man of peace, humility and with a deep faith in God hereby accept the results of the elections as announced by the National Elections Commission (NEC)".

Preliminary results announced on Thursday showed Weah won Tuesday's run-off with 61.5 percent of the vote, based on more than 98 percent of the ballots cast.

Johnson Sirleaf's 12-year rule cemented peace after Liberia's 1989-2003 civil war and won her the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize but she has been criticized over high-level corruption scandals and persistent poverty.

The 51-year-old Weah, a senator who entered politics after his 2002 retirement, led the first-round election in October but didn't receive enough votes to win outright.
