On arrival, Bell County deputies discovered that the woman and her husband were attacked by two pit bulls.

Officials said that Bethany Stephens was killed by her two pit bulls while she was walking in Goochland County, Virginia, last week.

The Bell County Sheriff's Department has identified the woman as Lorraine Brock Saylor, 66.

"Johnny got a gun and shot both dogs, killing one of them instantly", said Steele. Also, the dog which was killed by Johnny will undergo a necropsy.

The sheriff urged residents to be on the lookout for the injured dog.

"Pit bulls are left at shelters in record numbers-and since they are hard to adopt out, reputable shelters (that don't slam the door in the dogs' faces) are finding that they must euthanize more pit bulls and pit bull mixes than all other dogs combined", the group says.

At the time of the attack, Lankford was in the Bell County Detention Center for crimes related to assault, domestic violence, and unlawful imprisonment.

"I'd seen them, but I didn't think they'd be mean like that", James Saylor said. He now faces another charge of harboring a vicious animal, the sheriff's department said.

The call came in around 10:20 a.m. Sunday morning.

Responders pronounced Lorraine dead on the scene and Johnny was taken to a hospital with injuries to his arm and head. "She anxious more about neighbors and friends than she did herself, as Johnny's the same way, they're just a very giving couple".

When deputies arrived, they found the couple had been "savagely attacked by two pit bulls".

An autopsy of Lorraine's body will be conducted on Tuesday, according to Bell County Coroner Jay Steele.
