That's because Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made it official that Patrick Mahomes, the team's first round pick and rookie quarterback sensation, will be making his first ever pro start on Sunday in Week 17 at Mile High Stadium.

Leading up to the game, Reid did not want to set the bar too high for what we might expect to see.

"Every snap that he gets is a valuable snap for him whenever he has that chance of getting in there", Reid told reporters during his Wednesday press conference.

But Smith has no guaranteed money remaining on his contract, and specualation has run rampant from the moment Kansas City sent the 27th overall pick and a 2018 first-rounder to Buffalo to move up and nab its potential future of the franchise that the clock is ticking on the incumbent Smith. Smith played the past two regular-season finales with the team needing a victory to clinch the divisions those years.

Smith doesn't appear to be in danger of being benched, especially since the Chiefs have broken out of their midseason funk and won three games in a row. He hasn't played a single National Football League snap since going to Kansas City, but has excellent teachers around him in Smith and Reid.

Suddenly, a meaningless game on New Year's Eve has a little bit of intrigue.

Nevertheless, there's been some speculation that the Chiefs will look to part ways with Smith this offseason and hand the offense over to Mahomes.

If Smith plays, he can break the club record for most touchdowns in a season since the AFL-NFL merger (Elvis Grbac had 28 in 2000).
