Human Rights Day was established in 1948, and ever since that auspicious day it has stood as the first major stride forward in ensuring that the rights of every human across the globe are protected. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.

North Korea claimed itself to be a bastion of human rights in a white paper released Saturday, defying global criticism of its long-standing abuses.

The report blamed the US and other "imperialist countries" for hindering the processes of "preparation" and the "adoption" of human rights legalities even after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human rights. Today, the UDHR is the world's most translated document, with over 416 different translations.

Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on December 10 after the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The rights and principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration have helped shape, guide and inspire the drafting of various documents adopted by regional, continental and national bodies, including the African Charter on Human and People's Rights in 1981, which provided for a single human rights instrument guaranteeing civil and political, economic, social and cultural, and collective rights in Africa.

The award has been conferred every 10th December each from 1993 to commemorate and honor the United Nations International Human Rights Day.

How can Human Rights exist when Humans do not even dignify themselves by destroying the planet, insulting Mother Nature, ruining the Earth, polluting space, the skies, the land and the seas, dessecrating its forests, burning down trees murdering their inhabitants, dropping bins of toxic waste to the depths of the ocean without any respect for the creatures living there, and murdering countless species of animals before they are even encountered? We have many challenges in our society and it is all upto us how we fight back for justice.

This year, Human Rights Day kicks off a year-long campaign to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The last time FPT governments got together to discuss human rights priorities was in 1988.
