Shots Fired In Lower Manhattan Was 'Absolutely An Attack' Witness Says

U.S. police say a vehicle has been driven into a bicycle path in New York City, causing "several fatalities and numerous" injuries.

Early reports said the victims has been shot, but NY 4 reports that that officials said a truck driver plowed into people walking and biking.

NYPD News' official Twitter account confirms that there are "several fatalities" and the suspect "is in custody".

Police said they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

"It is an unfolding situation and our thoughts are with those who have been affected by this tragedy", she said on Channel Seven's Sunrise program.

The incident occured shortly after 3 p.m. local time (1900 UTC) near West Side Highway and Chambers Street. Photos show a smashed up Home Depot rental utility vehicle.

Parts of several mangled bicycles littered the popular bike path along the West Side Highway and the Hudson River, as medics tended to the wounded in the background. Authorities call for calm as the investigation is ongoing.

Another witness, Ramon Cruz, described what he saw. He looks frustrated, panicked, confused.

Tom Gay, a school photographer, was on Warren Street and heard people saying there was an accident. "He's got a gun".

It was a white pickup truck. The driver was then shot by police after jumping out with what turned out to be two fake guns. "And then all of the sudden, four shots went off and we all just started running".
