The team announced on Tuesday that Garoppolo will be the 49ers starting quarterback against the Chicago Bears in Week 13.

Garoppolo, 26, will be given the opportunity to become the 49ers' face of the franchise, according to first-year coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch since being acquired in a trade with the Patriots Oct. 31.

Garoppolo was expected to take over the starting job for the 49ers after the franchise traded for him four weeks ago.

Garoppolo entered the game with just 1:07 remaining, but had enough time to throw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy in the 24-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

In seven games (five starts), Beathard had 1,430 yards, 4 touchdowns and 6 interceptions while completing 54.9 percent of his passes.

It comes as no surprise fans wanted Garoppolo sooner rather than later.

Beathard started the past five games after replacing Brian Hoyer, who began the season as San Francisco's starting quarterback.

Beathard was injured in Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, which pressed Garoppolo into brief duty.

"He's gotten better", Shanahan said.

Garoppolo, an Eastern Illinois product, won his first start by rallying the Patriots past the Arizona Cardinals 23-21 in the opener, throwing for 264 yards and a touchdown.

It's Jimmy Garoppolo time in San Francisco.

Beathard's 69.2 passer rating ranks 34th among qualified quarterbacks. "I'll have a decision for you guys by Wednesday". With Beathard dealing with a knee bruise and hip strain, Shanahan likely felt compelled to go with the only fully healthy option, Garoppolo.
