Both new models of the BMW i8 shown in LA are due to enter showrooms as 2019 model year entrants.

The Roadster wasn't the only i8-related development BMW unveiled in LA; since the i8 Coupe was introduced, electrification technology has evolved, and it benefits from the implements that have gone into the Roadster. The open-top i8 carries forward all the hardware of the i8 Coupe along with the design language.

The resulting space between the roof box and the seats is around 3.5 square feet, while the rear cargo area can hold 4.7 square feet of your BMW i8 cargo area-shaped objects. In electric-only mode, the top speed is 120km/h, while the driving range is now up to 53km in the soft-top, and 55km in the coupe.

BMW claims a 0-62 miles per hour (100 km/h) time of 4.6 seconds for the i8 Roadster, with the i8 Coupe's time pegged at 4.4 seconds.

Today, during its auto show premiere at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, BMW announced pricing for the all-new 2018 BMW M5.

BMW says the inherent structural integrity of the i8's carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and aluminum structure has helped in limiting the weight gain for the Roadster, which is claimed to tip the scales 132 lbs.

The hybrid-specific all-wheel-drive set-up sees the petrol engine driving the rear wheels while the electric motor does its business upfront.

The long-awaited i8 Roadster will go on sale alongside an updated version of the two-plus-two i8 coupe early next year. It's cell capacity is increased from 20 Ah to 34 Ah, boosting energy capacity from 7.1 kWh to 11.6, giving it a net energy capacity of 9.4 kWh (usable).

Before we look at the new Roadster, let's jump into the guts of this newly-updated i8. Power to the rear wheels continues to be transmitted through a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the electric motor on the front axle uses a 2-speed gearbox.

Like the Coupe, the Roadster has gullwing doors, and the pair are available with new exterior paint finishes and 20-inch alloy wheel designs in either two-tone or black.

The refreshed i8 and new i8 Roadster should be hitting Canadian dealerships around spring 2018. A Tera World Copper interior trim featuring premium cloth and leather upholstery in an Amido/E-Copper color scheme is new and exclusive to the Roadster.
