US President Donald Trump has lashed out at the mayor of Puerto Rico's capital city in a war of words over recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria smashed into the US territory.

Several Puerto Ricans contacted by CNN stood up for San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, who apparently provoked the Trump tweet with a call for more aid, and many said the Puerto Rican community at home and overseas is already working together.

Trump is quoting praise from Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rossello, who says the president and the Trump administration have "delivered" for the USA territory.

"The president, instead of tweeting against the mayor of San Juan who's watching her people die and just made a plea for help, ought to roll up his sleeves and get to work here", he said.

President Donald Trump says his administration has "done a great job with the nearly impossible situation in Puerto Rico" after Hurricane Maria struck the island. "10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job", Trump added.

Almost all of Puerto Rico's 3.4 million residents are without power, and many without cell service, food, or water. On Sunday, budget director Mick Mulvaney said Cruz hadn't visited a FEMA emergency field office in San Juan even though Vice President Mike Pence said she had. "I know the good heart of the American people and I know that when a mayday sound goes off, they come to the rescue", she told ABC's "This Week". When federal officials reported late in the week that they had reached 35 municipalities, Santiago noted that Puerto Rico had 78 in total.

"Most of our nursing homes have people that have an inability to move, so they're stuck in the 14th floor, they have no water, they have no food, they - majority are insulin-dependent", she said.

"She has been there once", Long said.

Manchester City confirm Benjamin Mendy has torn cruciate ligament
He joked on his Twitter feed that he would be joining "Injury FC" on loan for a couple of months but hoped to return stronger. Mendy then played in the games against Liverpool, Feyenoord, Watford and Palace, with City keeping clean sheets in each one.

"Our priorities at this juncture keep being food delivery, delivery of gas, making sure that the hospitals are working, making sure we can get more hospitals on line, that they get their diesel and their fuel", Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló Nevares said Saturday.

"I can tell you this: We have done an incredible job considering there's absolutely nothing to work with". Donald Trump still hasn't sent enough troops to help the island ― including the even more isolated Vieques and tiny Culebra off its eastern coast.

Singer Rihanna also urged Mr Trump to offer more help to the people of Puerto Rico, which has been coping with shortages of food, drinking water and electricity since Maria hit earlier in September. The President and First Lady are expected in Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

He says Trump "is politicizing the devastation and criticizing a Mayor who has worked overtime to provide love, comfort and hope to her neighbors, and images of her tireless and selfless efforts are now iconic".

"We're getting commodities to Puerto Rico", said Long.

"Well maybe from where she's standing it's a good news story", Yulín Cruz told CNN's Alisyn Camerota after she was played the clip on "New Day".
