In what surprised nearly every fan of baseball, the New York Yankees slammed Corey Kluber the ace of the Cleveland Indians pitching staff for six runs over just 2 2/3 innings during Game 2 Friday night of the American League Division Series.
Following an excruciating extra-innings loss to the Indians on Friday, Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman stirred a bit of controversy after "liking" a very pointed Instagram comment directed at manager Joe Girardi.
Instead of seizing momentum by tying the best-of-five series at one game apiece, the Yankees trail 2-0 heading into Game 3 Sunday night at the Stadium.
And he defended his use of the bullpen, when he pulled CC Sabathia after just 77 pitches with one out in the sixth to bring in Green.
With two on and two outs in the sixth and the Yankees leading 8-3, Green allowed a double off the leftfield wall by Yan Gomes that put runners at second and third.
"There was nothing that told us that he was not hit by the pitch", Girardi said after the game.
Did you see the Harvest Moon on Thursday?
Harvest moons often appear orange in the fading light of the sun, and signal the waning days of the harvesting season. The orange glow comes from light being scattered through the Earth's atmosphere, like during sunsets and sunrises.
Francisco Lindor came next and crushed a tide-turning grand slam that made it 8-7.
"It's frustrating", he said.
"I take responsibility for everything", said Girardi of the 13-inning, 9-8 loss.
Girardi said Sanchez's reaction was not relevant, pointing out, correctly, that players nearly always want a challenge on close plays.
With a five-run lead, Girardi should have challenged.
However, it was called by the plate umpire as a hit-by-pitch and they are reviewable. "By the time we got the super slo-mo, we are beyond a minute". Again, I screwed up. "It's hard. It's a hard day for me".
