He responded by winning the NBA MVP award, becoming the first player in 55 years to average a triple-double for an entire season.

Westbrook, who was expected to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, instead signed a five-year extension to remain with the Thunder throughout his prime - he will be almost 34 when the contract expires.

The extension gives Westbrook the biggest contract in National Basketball Association history, $233 million over six years when combined with his $28.5 million salary this season, according to Wojnarowski. According to, Oklahoma City was 12.2 points better per 100 possessions with Westbrook on the floor during the regular season, and the team had a minus-51.3 net rating in the 46 minutes he was on the bench during the playoffs. Amid the Thunder's despair in losing Durant, Westbrook's shorter-term commitment gave Presti and assistant GM Troy Weaver the ability to pursue the trades with in and NY to acquire George and Anthony, respectively.

"Like I said before, man, this is a place I want to be", Westbrook said on Monday. "I am so honored to have the opportunity to continue my career here with the Thunder".

Meunier: PSG don't have Neymar dependency
We are getting a pretty good price to bet on PSG to win this game and as a result that is the best option in my opinion. One of our objectives is to win the Champions League .

Westbrook made use of the Designated Player Veteran Extension, or "supermax" deal, which allowed the reigning Most Valuable Player to garner 35 percent of the salary cap and five extra seasons. Over the course of three months, the Thunder traded for Paul George and Carmelo Anthony, giving up just Enes Kanter, Victor Oladipo, Domantas Sabonis, Doug McDermott, and second-round pick in exchange. Instead, Westbrook will look to build a championship contender with Oklahoma City, and he will try to convince George and Anthony to remain with the Thunder long-term.

Westbrook had until October 16 to sign the extension, or he would have had to have waited until next summer.

"When you play in Oklahoma City you play in front of the best fans in the world, I'm looking forward to bringing everything I've got, for them, this city and for this organisation".
