19 Killed, Hundreds Injured in Stampede at Love Parade Music Festival in Germany

The Love Parade techno-music festival in the German city of Duisburg on Saturday was a nightmare for those who attended it. 19 persons were crushed to death in a stampede that happened in the tunnel that leads to the area where the event was held. More than 300 were also injured in the stampede. More than one million people were attending the event and the tunnel is the only passage to the event. Party goers where were already inside the grounds where the parade was being held were not aware that a stampede was happening in the tunnel and continued with the festivities.

Love Parade Stampede

Love Parade is one of Europe’s largest electronic dance music events; it started in Berlin in 1989. According to WDR television, 1.4 million people were attending the festival this year and overcrowding was happening. The police tried to stop the revelers from overcrowding the parade area but people panicked in the tunnel causing the stampede. An investigation is now being conducted to discover what has sparked the stampede.

The organizers of this year’s Love Parade said that the event was the one, no more Love Parade will happen in the future. Rainer Schaller, Love Parade organizer, gave this statement at a press conference:

“The Love Parade was always a peaceful event and a happy party” but would forever be overshadowed by the tragedy, it’s over for the Love Parade.
